At the lake today

the pix speak for themselvs.  I love the peacefulness and beauty of the lake.  And I kind of envy people who are lucky enough to live there.

Daylily

I absolutely love these orange daylilies you see everywhere right now.  Here's a photo of one.

Mailbox

I've seen a few mailboxes with flowers growing around the post, but I have not seen many that look like this.  I might try it.

Three planters

Cleveland School Fire

On the night of May 17, 1923, approximately 300 persons local to the little country school known as the Cleveland School, southeast of Camden, South Carolina, attended the children's graduation play. During the play an oil lamp fell, igniting the second floor auditorium. The resulting fire destroyed the school and killed 77 people.

The area is now a monument to that great loss.  A miniature of the school has been erected on the grounds, and there is a monument with a plaque listing the victims.

This is Armed Forces Day

and I don't have a photo to go along with this topic.

Here's a little information on Armed Forces Day.

Armed Forces Day is celebrated on the third Saturday in May.  The first Armed Forces Day was May 20, 1950.

According to a New York Times article published on May 17, 1952: "This is the day on which we have the welcome opportunity to pay special tribute to the men and women of the Armed Forces ... to all the individuals who are in the service of their country all over the world. Armed Forces Day won't be a matter of parades and receptions for a good many of them. They will all be in line of duty and some of them may give their lives in that duty."
"The heritage of freedom must be guarded as carefully in peace as it was in war. Faith, not suspicion, must be the key to our relationships. Sacrifice, not selfishness, must be the eternal price of liberty. Vigilance, not appeasement, is the byword of living freedoms. Our Armed Forces in 1950—protecting the peace, building for security with freedom—are "Teamed for Defense ..."

General Omar N. Bradley
Former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff

"...Word to the Nation: Guard zealously your right to serve in the Armed Forces, for without them, there will be no other rights to guard."
President John F. Kennedy, 1962

A 7 year old designed today's google doodle

Technology giant Google has announced the winner of the United States 2011 'Doodle 4 Google' competition. Seven-year-old Matteo Lopez of South San Francisco is the 2011 winner with his imaginative doodle, entitled "Space Life."

The theme of 2011 Doodle 4 Google contest was "What I'd like to do someday," and Matteo, who attends Monte Verde Elementary School, answered by painting his dream to "... become an astronaut and explore space life." Matteo’s doodle of the Google logo artfully depicts a trip to space, walking on the moon, and even making friends with aliens.

He was selected from the 40 finalists, who were picked out from more than 107,000 submissions. THW winner Matteo will receive a $15,000 college scholarship, a netbook computer and a $25,000 technology grant for his school. Moreover, Matteo's winning doodle is featured on United States Google search engine home page on Friday, May 20.

Google also selected three finalists: fourth grader Joseph Eugene Miller, who also selected a space theme; seventh grader Justas Varpucanskis, who depicted an underwater universe; and high school junior Hannah Newsom, who would like to be an illustrator. All three will receive a $5,000 college scholarship.

Doodle 4 Google is a competition where Google invite K-12 students to use their artistic talents to think big and redesign Google’s homepage logo for millions to see.

Another Gamecock fan

I'm always interested when I see a Gamecock fan.  I was shopping and a man parked his truck beside me -- so I had to snap a picture.

Observed in a parking lot

Recently I went to lunch and there in the parking lot were three sporty cars -- now there is a karate type studio there, so maybe these people were there for that, rather than for lunch.

Blooms in my yard

I don't know what they are -- but they are intriguing to me.  The second photo is of someone else's plant.  It is certainly the more beautiful of the two.  Wish mine would be that pretty.

1965 Mustang

What a beauty!!  I'd love to take this car for a quick little drive.  Years ago, my brother owned a red mustang (I don't remember the year), and I've always loved Mustangs!!!!

You see everything at the library

On a recent visit to our county library I noticed these two vehicles -- quite a difference, but both appeal to me.  I think the closeup on the bike says "Freedom isn't free, but it's worth fighting for".

A hollow tree

in my yard.  Unfortunately, it's swarming with ants -- so I have to get something to get rid of that problem.

Field of Dreams

Years ago I remember seeing many fields with cattle on them.  Now, in my little corner of the world, it's a rare sight.

I love these little wild roses

Coors car and fire trucks

I had to do some shopping at Walmart today.  As I drove up I noticed the fire truck and that tall ladder, then noticed the other things there.
